ARTIST RECEPTION Saturday, November 5, 5 – 8 pm

d.e.n. contemporary art
is pleased to present "My Own Personal Problems with Paradise," an exhibition of new paintings by Los Angeles artist Tim Forcum, opening November 5 and continuing through December 17, 2005. In his first solo exhibition with the gallery, Forcum will present seven large-scale oil paintings that allude to both physical and psychological landscapes.

Formally and metaphorically, Forcum conjures alternative realities in his work, wherein clusters of curious shapes maneuver within the precincts of the canvas, through and around neighboring forms in search of harmonious coexistence. The imagery charts a process or a journey, whether navigating through complicated terrain of a landscape, or prudently situating oneself in interpersonal relationships.

Forcum’s color palette also mirrors this journey and the various realities, with a chromatic range from the somber hues of post-war abstraction to the brighter spectrum of contemporary painting and graphics.

Integrating an array of brushwork, from loose strokes of abstract expressionism’s gestural automatism, to silhouettes thinned to semi-transparency, to sharply delineated forms of a graphic aesthetic, Forcum’s use of telescoping and layering of elements reveal and obscure one another, evoking a range of moods, from tense complexity to agreeable resolution.

A native of southern California, Forcum lives and works in Los Angeles. After receiving a B.A. and M.A. in painting at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), he received his M.F.A. in 1993 from California State University, Fullerton. He currently teaches fine art at CSUN. Forcum will be featured among other Los Angeles painters, in an article in the November issue of Tema Celeste Magazine.

"My Own Personal Problems with Paradise" is on view until December 17.

The gallery is located at 6023 Washington Blvd., Culver City. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 5:30 pm.
