d.e.n. contemporary art proudly presents Drawings, an exhibition of new work by the southern California-based artist CAROL KAUFMAN, beginning June 3 and continuing through July 8.

Kaufman executes her drawings with precision using graphite and sometimes colored pencil. Viewing the work at mid-distance, they glow with the industrial sheen of metal or lead. Upon closer viewing, a quality of depth is revealed by minute silvery strokes laid across the surface in a variety of directions. Kaufman draws with such assiduous concentration and varied tonality, that through such labor-intensive effort the drawings have the weight and impenetrability of painting.

Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, Kaufman lives and works in downtown Los Angeles. She has exhibited her work extensively in reputable galleries throughout California, including solo exhibitions at Kiyo Higashi Gallery, and group exhibitions with Angles Gallery, Modernism, Patricia Faure Gallery, Hunsaker/Schlesinger Fine Art, and others.

d.e.n. contemporary art proudly presents the first Los Angeles solo exhibition for New York-based artist SKY PAPE, in Drawing Breath, an exhibition of new work on paper from June 3 through July 8.

Using universally familiar materials such as ink, graphite and paper, Pape executes her drawings using the most primal element in human nature: the breath. Pape propels the ink around the hand-made paper by blowing it with a tube rather than applying it with a brush or pen. The painterly lines are then carefully cut out, assembled and layered into a topographical pattern. The resulting work evokes such organic forms as arterial/physiological systems, botanical branches, roots, and sinuous waterways.

Pape is Canadian-born and lives and works in New York City. Her work has been exhibited widely throughout the U.S. and abroad, and is included in several public collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. She is the recipient of several honors and awards, including grants from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation and, most recently, the E.D. Foundation.

A reception for both artists will be held Saturday, June 3, from 5 – 8 p.m. The gallery is located at 6023 Washington Blvd. in Culver City and our hours are Tuesday - Saturday from 11:00 to 5:30. For additional information and visual material, please contact us at (310) 559-3023 or info@dencontemporaryart.com
