New Monotypes

April 15 – May 27, 2006

d.e.n. contemporary art is pleased to present Monochord, an exhibition of new paintings, drawings and prints by California artist Daniel Brice beginning April 15 and continuing through May 27. In these abstractions, Brice’s dedication to the utility of line continues, to remarkably seductive yet subtle ends. Executed in charcoal, these lyrical works are evidence of the artist’s masterful discipline and extreme restraint.

Brice juxtaposes densely pigmented straight and organic lines, configuring the negative space of sanded-down layers to jointly suggest figure, landscape and atmosphere. Similar to a well-composed counter-melody, Brice’s calculatedly cool and well-devised paintings/drawings harmoniously construct a dialogue of both strength and understatement that resonates deep within.

The exhibition will include several works on burlap and linen, as well as on paper. In this work, Brice’s determination in combining both organic sensibilities with the linear is strongly portrayed and in its complexity, references exist to early modernist painters such as Piet Mondrian and Kasimir Malevich, as well as Minimalists like Sol Le Witt and Brice Marden.

The artist lives in Los Angeles and has exhibited works widely throughout California, including the Riverside Art Museum and the Long Beach Art Museum. In 2003 and 2005, he produced monoprints and lithographs published by the internationally recognized Tamarind Institute.
